The Lucille Lortel Theatre is an off-Broadway playhouse in Manhattan’s West Village. It opened as a movie house in 1926 but was converted into a theater which opened in 1953. It has a capacity of 299 and has hosted many notable performances throughout the years. It is named for actress-producer Lucille Lortel whose husband purchased the building as an anniversary present to Lortel. Following her death in 1981, the building was left to the Lucille Lortel Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting excellence and diversity in theater.
