Located at 239 West 45th Street in midtown Manhattan, the Music Box Theatre is a true example of the venues that give Broadway its legendary and unique status. Constructed in part by composer Irving Berlin himself to house his famed "Music Box Reviews," the aptly named theater opened in 1921 and has housed presentations such as Cradle Snatchers featuring Humphrey Bogart, and hosted a string of hits for the playwriting genius of Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin. One of the more intimate examples of a Broadway facility, the theater has a seating capacity of 860 and is noted for its unusually large box seats, lovingly referred to as "ashtrays" by Dame Edna during her run there. More recently, the Music Box has premiered the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner, August: Osage County (2009) and a revival of Tennessee William's Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (2003) starring Ashley Judd and Ned Beatty. A plaque in the front lobby pays tribute to a treasured monument alive with the pulse of Broadway known as The Music Box Theatre.
