In the home of Hollywood, one should expect nothing less than excellence when it comes to venues for the performing arts and The Pantages Theater, located at the heart of the city, does not disappoint. The structure itself is a testament to Hollywood history. Built in 1930, to provide an arena for the then popular vaudeville acts interspersed with first run movies, the theater helped keep the disaster stricken Los Anglenos entertained through the Great Depression, and still survives today. In addition to hosting legendary live plays and musicals, the 2,700 seat theater has hosted musical events, and provides the setting for the 1995 Michael Jackson video, "You Are Not Alone" and the Talking Heads' 1984 film Stop Making Sense. Productions presented at he Pantages include Phantom of the Opera, Grease, Momma Mia, Hair and Hamilton among a plethora of other classics too numerous to mention. Besides serving as an enduring entertainment center, the palatial art deco theater has earned a well deserved place among the Los Angeles Historic- Cultural Monuments in Hollywood. Be it to see a great show, or just to see a legendary piece of Hollywood history, no trip to the city of Angles would be complete without a visit to the Pantages.
