Hippodrome Performing Arts Center Info

When a venue stands the test of time the way the Hippodrome has, it means it has something valuable to offer. The Hippodrome Theater opened in Baltimore Maryland during the height of Vaudeville as a 3,000 seat movie theatre selling tickets at a price of 25 cents for the matinee. Soon, the reputation of the elegant venue grew, attracting the likes of Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Benny Goodman and His Orchestra, Milton Berle and Jack Benny among others. Remaining strong throughout the years of the Depression, poor business caused the Hippodrome to close its opulent doors as the last remaining movie theater in downtown Baltimore in the 1990's. However, like the saying says, "The show must go on," and on it went when the curtain rose again in 2004 on the Hippodrome at The France-Merrick Performing Arts Center as part of a restoration project including three historic buildings in one state of the art showcase. Now part of a landmark exhibition including the Western National Bank and the Eutaw Savings Bank, the Hippodrome thrives with a regular rotation of touring Broadway acts, music, comedy, dance and some of the best artists the performing arts has to offer. Come and see a true survivor and a testament to the arts in the historical community of downtown Baltimore, Maryland and explore the past and the future of art culture in America.
