When a theater starts out as a synagogue, its bound for a long show business history. When in the 1940's the Ohabei Shalom synagogue took a sharp turn into becoming a fashionable nightclub for hot jazz artists, like Fats Waller, the stage was set for what was to become Boston, Massacusetts' Charles Playhouse. The 1958 transformation took place when a group of Boston University Graduates call the Actors Company, including Olympia Dukakis took over the building. It quickly became one of the premier playhouse in America's theater movement, featuring works by Tennessee Williams, Brecht, and O'Neill, featuring casts studded with stars like Al Pacino and Jane Alexander. Today it is the home of the acclaimed "Blue Man Group" in its 16th year and the whodunnit comedy, "Shear Madness." So if you're looking for a great live production, come to the Charles in Boston. Some say it's a religious experience.
