When a stadium literally "brings the roof down, " you know it must be worth checking out. The XL Center is a multipurpose convention center and 15,564 capacity arena in Hartford, Connecticut. Built in 1975, the center lost its top when the weight of the snow and poor roof construction caused the roof to collapse after a win by the University of Connecticut Men's Basketball team, although some may say it had something to do with fan enthusiasm. The roof has since been rebuilt, but the passion of the crowd is still thriving. Since the event, the XL has hosted musical performances from the Grateful Dead, pop legend Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross. The arena has also been the venue for the 1994 NHL All Star games, the 1994 NHL Draft, and the Davis Cup playoff in 1987, which included one of the longest tennis matches in history between John McEnroe and Boris Becker. Despite the Arena's historical and cultural significant,leaders in Hartford have been considering replacing the XL with a new facility. With its fortieth birthday fast approaching, the XL center may not have much longer to stand before the roof comes down again for good. Come check out before its too late; you'll be glad you did.
