When it first opened its doors in 1928, the Boston Globe declared the Boston Opera House, "so magnificent, it kind of takes your breath away for a while." Designed in a combination of Italian and French styles, and constructed as a memorial to vaudeville impresario Brian Franklin Keith, it is built with a degree of luxury that remains unrivaled to this day. Although originally built to seat 2,900, its current capacity is 2,677 and provides more comfortable seating and excellent sidelines. The 2002 renovation of the venue involved 30,00 man hours of plaster work, with sprinkler heads concealed under the various rosettes and decorations, two hundred foot domes featuring painted murals, and 350 restored light fixtures and chandeliers. However, if the architectural structure of the venue is not enough to warrant a visit, the opera house has provided a stage to some of the most acclaimed opera performances of the modern era. The House hosted a six month run of the Lion King in 2004 and has since them featured a steady roster of Broadway productions, including the Boston Ballet Nutcracker, featuring the Opera's houses primary tenant, the legendary Boston Ballet itself. A true jewel in the heart of Boston, the Boston Opera House is the ideal venue for live performance and a stunning feat of architecture and design.
