The self proclaimed "nation's oldest and largest outdoor musical theater," with a seating capacity of 11,000 the Muny in Missouri is the premiere spot for Broadway style musical theater in Saint Louis. This gem of a non profit theater operates in its own eclectic style. Open to the public in only the summer months, a staff of fewer than twenty people work all winter to prepare for the next summer season. All shows are rehearsed within eleven days, with two rehearsals held two or three days before the opening. But, don't let the off beat style of the theater fool you, the Muny is anything but amateur. Despite its nonconventional habits, the Muny has managed to show St Louis some of the best in musical theater, including productions of Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Annie, The Wizard of Oz, and many other popular classics. Another feature of the Muny: the audience members get to pick the shows. Every season, surveys are handed out to the audience asking members to select their top seven choices from a list of shows, which contribute to the upcoming season's program.
