The early years of the theater were marked by such events as opera singer Rosa Ponselle singing four encores of "O Sole Mio," Amelia Earhart lecturing on cross Atlantic air travel, and Thornton Wilder reading and excerpt from The Women of Argos. When the theater's future was endangered by the popularity of celluloid movies in the 1990's, it looked like it would close its doors forever, until a devoted community poured their efforts into saving it. Today, the Colonial Theater stands, beginning its third decade as a venue for performances and award winning films, and earning a well earned place on the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2004.
